St Petersburg - 10th Conference

State University of Aerospace Instrumentation

9-11 September

Theme: Survival of Early Christian Traditions

Some 39 papers were presented at the 10th conference of Asia-Pacific Early Christian Studies Society, including that from the keynote speaker, Sergey Ivanov of National Research University, Moscow, who spoke on the Friday evening before the society reception. The session was chaired by Basil Louriè. The address was entitled "The Survival of Extravagant Saintliness in the Mid-Byzantine Period." The shorter presentations were divided between sixteen sessions. Our speakers came from Russia, Belgium, Japan, Germany, Hungary, Australia, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Greece, Finland, and South Africa, again demonstrating interest in our society from scholars in others parts of the world.

Our cultural excursion for this conference was a fantastic visit on the Sunday morning to State Hermitage Museum. The conference dinner was hosted privately with Georgian cuisine and was a spectacular and thoroughly enjoyable experience. The food was extravagantly plentiful and the entertainment delightfully unexpected. Particular thanks go to Basil Louriè, our conference convenor, ably assisted by Olga (Xenia) Mitrenina.
