Australian Catholic University
22-24 September
Theme: Responses to Conflict in Early Christianity
Three keynotes speakers delivered papers at the 11th APECSS conference. Robin Jensen of Notre Dame University, Indiana, spoke on the Frida evening. Her paper was entitled "Spitting on Statues and Saving Hercules' Beard: The Conflict over Images (and Idols) in Early Christianity" and was chaired by Bronwen Neil of Macquarie University. Boris Repschinski, SJ of Innsbruck University, Austria, spoke on the Saturday before the conference dinner. The session was chaired by David Sim of Australian Catholic University and the paper was entitled "Shift the Issue and Win the Fight? Rhetorical Strategies of Dealing with Conflicts in Matthew's Gospel". The final keynote speaker was Jonathan Conant of Brown University, Rhode Island, whose paper was entitled "Conflict, Trauma, and the Formation of an Early Christian Identity". He was chaired by Kazuhiko Demura of Okayama University.
In addition some 43 other papers in 15 sessions were scheduled for presentation on a wide range of topics in the New Testament and early Christian period relating to conflict. The speakers cam from Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Russia, South Korea, United States of America, Croatia, South Africa, Germany, Serbia, and Egypt. Thanks go to Bronwen Neil who acted as convenor for this conference. This was the first time we held our APECSS conference in Australia distinct from the Prayer and Spirituality or Early Christian Centuries series previously run at Australian Catholic University. The conference dinner at Zio's was a great success.
